The Human Shaped Whole

Starting off I wasn’t sure how to approach this exhibition. I’m not sure if it needed the construction site in the beginning 1:42 but I did find it interesting that the suitcase was basically a file on your computer. Showing the audience that it held data and a lot of information. My perspective is that it brought questions up for the viewer to ask. In a way creating a thought process and dialogue with the piece. Moving forward it was a bit trippy at first since we do have a 360º view of the area and space. While watching it I was able to move my perspective around which was nice, looking from a point but able to move around and basically have human eyesight but in this VR.

While there is marketing involved we don’t know what quite happens. I was a bit confused about what impact the audio had on the images. Is that storage used? What is the backpack about? Does it relate to other topics later on? After that, there is no transition to the waterfall and so you’re just placed right in there. Floating through space we hover over the waterfall and are transported into the workspace again. The next scene is a warzone but I am more curious why there were shoes left in that hut. What is that message?

I think the theme with the sink was a nice way to keep transition into the different atmosphere. I gave the audience something to hold on to. It also allowed us to have a different perspective of the space once we were viewing the space from the inside of the sink. Around the 8:32 minute mark, we are transported into a can-looking cylinder with a view of a cityscape. The view gives my stomach a queasy feeling because there was no floor. But there was a ceiling that looked like the top of a can. Where are we and is there anything going on in the wisdom that I should be aware of? We then hear a heartbeat and that definitely brought up suspense and anxiety for me because I was curious about what was going to happen next.

The glitching 10:04 at the end made me super claustrophobic so I wonder if this was shown in a cube and someone was able to sit in the middle would my reaction be the same? I did think back to our assignment and how well this excerpt would fit in with our project. Or even screenshotting a second of it and then glitching it more using a text editor. What would that look like and then we are actually applying techniques we’ve learned. Overall there was a real quality to this video, but it was also clear that it was a VR experience.

Some questions I have are how was this presented and where? Is there an animal-shaped whole? What were the intentions of this exhibition? What software was used to create this VR experience and how long did it take? What did collaborating look like?
