WRITING

Exploratory Writing 2A

After watching both Youtube videos about the internet I never knew very much about the history let alone knowing about the first posts, images and words/phrases that were posted to the world wide web. I found the creators and their pasts very interesting knowing that the creation of the world wide web was from curiosity and pleasure rather than innovation and exploration was quite fascinating to learn. I wonder what our world would have been like if the world wide web wasn’t created when it was, if there would have been another mode of transmitting messages and communication or if technology today would be where it is now.

One point I want to make is that our insane present that we live in now is crazy and a lot of the world has changed to online learning. People are not as comfortable with one another, we don’t know how to act in person and the new normal has changed a lot. Not only living in a pandemic has changed our use of the media and internet but it's now a way we do a lot of our daily activities. Those two videos made me question what a pandemic would look like without the internet. Or what would it have looked like five decades ago compared to now. Would the internet be as prominent in people's lives? Would online line learning still occur or would people not be as fluent in the online languages? What would people’s childhoods look like? I know one thing that my friends and I talk about is how we grew up with the internet and having an online presence whereas we also played outside, got our hands dirty and were more adventurous. We really didn’t have a fear of getting dirty, what the repercussions were with taking risks and going on adventures without our parents. Now I see that kids are glued to their technology, due to learning at home and being in a confined space. What will our future look like due to the increase of the younger generation being completely fluent in technology and the internet.

Another tangent would be that with my art majors I always consider my personal aesthetic and finding my signature look within my pieces of work. Watching the video that focused on how the internet has changed based on aesthetics, color choices and refinements with a sense of fitting in made me think a lot of how I viewed my personal social media. My friends always say my Instagram is perfect because many of my photos follow a color scheme, with similar edits and images. Mixing adventure with food, travel and friends. And yes of course I see that because I post it but then looking at moving into an apartment, decorating rooms, choosing my daily outfits, making websites for classes, resumes and creating art I do see a light bright airy color scheme and style to my work.

With that, the video made me reflect on why this century involves so much white as backgrounds, in images and used as a modern view. Many websites have simple text, bold photos, straight lines, pops of color and all fit into this small box because of our need to belong. While also being the same and trendy for instance. And so I see that there is a huge difference in how websites were made to be unique to now where we want websites to belong together. Why is that and how did we get to where we are today? But also what does the future hold for us and will creators and website coders and programmers try and bring back the idea that websites are supposed to be unique and people can go insane if they want to. And, yes I feel like I do hold back sometimes because maybe a piece of art that I make doesn’t feel like me, but I should still post it and it shouldn’t make people think that the piece of art isn’t me.
